A solid work ethic is a requirement in today’s work climate. The job market being a competitive arena, its leaders never think twice about replacing an ineffective employee with one who meets and exceeds their expectations. While some leaders have become more compassionate and emphatic towards employees, it is not always the case. Displaying poor work ethic and showing no signs of improvement could cause one their job.

Employers and colleagues notice when an individual has poor work ethic. While consequences of displaying unfavorable performance at work may not be immediate, managers and teammates take notice. Colleagues may be discouraged to collaborate with someone who does not perform well, and employers may have to rethink tasks handed to them. People are drawn to their colleagues who have strong work ethic, which leads to better work opportunities and even career advancement.

According to Gene Bernshtam, a solid work ethic develops an environment of accountability and responsibility. For employees to have great work ethic, it must first be displayed by their employers. However, their leaders should not be their lid, especially when they do not walk their talk. With integrity, even when leaders are not looking, employees can practice consistency and excellence in their work.
