For today, Gene Bernshtam focuses on what he believes is overlooked in both commercial gyms and home gyms – safety. Here are some very important safety rules for people who work out.

Rule 1: If people get something from the rack, they should return it.

Far too many gym-goers ignore the simple act of returning weights to the rack. It’s rude, and it goes against gym etiquette. But more importantly, not re-racking the weights poses a danger to other people who could easily trip on them.

Rule 2: People should warm-up and stretch before workouts.

Warming up and stretching before workouts get the muscles in shape for the heavy lifting ahead. If people don’t do this, especially first thing in the morning when their muscles are cold, there is a high risk of injuries such as pulling or straining of muscles.

Rule 3: People should have trainers or partners spot them, especially when lifting heavy.

Gene Bernshtam cannot emphasize enough the importance of having a trainer or another person help out when people are lifting heavy. Sometimes, muscles fail mid-lift and having someone there can spare a person a whole world of pain.

Gene Bernshtam works in commercial real estate investment and development firm Avalon Holdings LLC. He is also a car enthusiast and is a member of the Ferrari Club of America (FCA) and the secretary of state for the Lamborghini Club of America in Illinois. He is also an avid weightlifter.
