These times can make it more difficult for people to focus at work. While some need to hold the fort in the office, others are asked to fulfill their responsibilities at home. Business owner Gene Bernshtam understands how the "new normal" setup at work can affect productivity. Below are some helpful practices that can increase focus during the workday.

Set clear goals and put them into writing
Knowing what needs to be done for the day will help a person focus better on a specific task. Before going to bed or setting up to work, preparing a to-do list that one can review will make it easier for a person to sit down and block out potential distractions.
Use a timer
According to productivity experts, using a timer is an effective tool to maintain focus. Whether it's 30 minutes or an hour, knowing that time is limited will make a person better at blocking distractions. It will also allow the mind to take a break and rest before the next task.
Prepare the workplace
Gene Bernshtam says that an uncomfortable workplace is the biggest hindrance to a productive day. Now that many are working from home, it's best to set up a place with proper lighting, good ventilation, and with all the essentials needed for the job. If possible, wear noise-canceling headsets to prevent distractions caused by background noises.
Eat and drink before starting work
Hunger and thirst can break a person's focus even if they've already found their rhythm at work. To prevent this from happening, be sure to eat and drink before work. Or if the job requires long hours without breaks, bringing drinks and snacks might keep a person from getting distracted.
