While they may share a lot of similarities in pillars and principles, strength training and bodybuilding are not one and the same. For people serious about the finer points of their fitness journey, Gene Bernshtam explains the difference between the two.

Purpose

The first difference between strength training and bodybuilding is their purpose. Strength training, as the name suggests, involves developing physical strength so the body is better suited to handle everyday physical activities such as lifting bags, pushing crates, and the like. Bodybuilding, on the other hand, is an endeavor that seeks to improve one’s physique.

Nutrition

While proper nutrition in strength training and bodybuilding is important, for those doing the latter, diet is a lot stricter. Calories and macros have to be counted to ensure that the muscles of the body develop the right way. One of the main goals of bodybuilders is to lose fat and diet has to follow suit. For strength training, people can eat a lot more.

Training

The third difference between strength training and bodybuilding is training. Bodybuilders tend to have more reps in their set since they are aiming for hypertrophy or the excessive bulking up of the muscles. Strength training, though practicing with less reps in a set, go for exercises that aim for strength development such as compound movements, Gene Bernshtam explains.
